Damascus Theatre Company Seeks Female-Presenting Actors for Nunsense

Damascus Theatre Company in Damascus, Maryland has announced open auditions for its upcoming production of the hilarious musical comedy Nunsense.

Auditions are by appointment only, and performers interested in being considered should reserve a slot through the online sign-up form.

This production will be directed by Keith Edward, with Megan McNellage serving as Assistant Director and Choreographer. Paul Rossen will serve as Music Director, and the production is produced by Carol Boyle and Elli Swink.

Nunsense features book, music, and lyrics by Dan Goggin.

Performance Dates 🎟️

Weekend performances are scheduled for:

📅 October 16 – November 1

There will be a matinee performance on Saturday, October 31, but no evening performance on Halloween.

The final performance location will be announced at a later date.

Rehearsal Schedule 🗓️

Rehearsals are expected to begin in August and will take place on:

✨ Weeknights, Monday through Thursday
✨ Saturday afternoons

Rehearsals will be held at venues throughout Montgomery County, primarily in Gaithersburg.

Performers should be prepared to provide any scheduling conflicts from August through November.

Audition Requirements 🎶

Actors auditioning should prepare the following:

🎵 A 32-bar cut of a song in a traditional musical theatre style
💃 Participation in a dance audition
📖 A cold reading from the script

An accompanist will be available. Performers may also use accompaniment tracks, but must bring their own speaker.

About Nunsense

Nunsense is a fast-paced musical comedy following the misadventures of five nuns who put together a fundraiser after a very unfortunate convent disaster.

After most of the sisterhood dies from botulism caused by vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia, Child of God, the surviving nuns must raise enough money to bury their dearly departed sisters.

The remaining sisters decide to stage a talent show, resulting in a wildly funny evening filled with music, comedy, eccentric characters, and plenty of chaos.

Damascus Theatre Company is casting 5 female-presenting actors, ages 18 and older.

Sister Mary Regina

Mother Superior

Sister Mary Regina is the head of the convent and older than the other nuns. She is outrageous, quick-witted, energetic, and secretly still drawn to the spotlight. A former tightrope walker, she misses performing and cannot resist a chance to shine.

Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto, F3–D5
Age Range: 40+

Sister Mary Hubert

Second in Command

Sister Mary Hubert is constantly competing with Sister Mary Regina while also serving as a mentor to the younger nuns. She may be responsible, but she loves to let loose whenever the opportunity arises.

Vocal Range: Alto belter with gospel flair, F3–C5
Age Range: 30+

Sister Mary Amnesia

Sister Mary Amnesia has lost her memory after a crucifix fell on her head. She is optimistic, sweet, shy at first, and full of childlike enthusiasm. She also has a puppet alter ego named Sister Mary Anette.

Vocal Range: High Soprano with Broadway and Country influence, G3–D6
Age Range: Any

Sister Robert Anne

Sister Robert Anne is tough, street-smart, and far more worldly than the other nuns. She begins as the “understudy” in the nuns’ production but is eager for her chance in the spotlight. A Brooklyn accent is optional.

Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto belter, F3–F5
Age Range: Any

Sister Mary Leo

Sister Mary Leo is a novice nun still adjusting to convent life after leaving her civilian life behind. She dreams of becoming the world’s first nun-ballerina and is easily pulled into mischief.

Ballet or en pointe experience is not required.

Vocal Range: Soprano, A3–G5
Age Range: Youngest of the group, but open to any age
