Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY Casting “The Color Purple”

Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY is inviting performers to attend open auditions for its upcoming production of The Color Purple: The Musical in Albany, New York.

The production is scheduled to run January 28 through February 7, 2027, at theREP in Albany. Auditions will take place over three days in early October, and no advance sign-up is required. Performers interested in being considered can simply attend one of the scheduled open calls.

Based on Alice Walker’s acclaimed novel, The Color Purple follows Celie’s powerful journey through hardship, family relationships, love, sisterhood, resilience, and self-discovery. The stage musical features a celebrated score with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, with a book by Marsha Norman.

There is no sign-up necessary. Auditionees may simply arrive and check in.

What to Prepare

Performers should prepare 16 bars of a song in the style of the show. Sheet music is welcome.

After the vocal portion of the audition, some performers may be asked to read selections from the script. No advance preparation is required for these readings.

Auditionees should also plan to remain for the entire audition session or until dismissed by the director.

Possible Dance and Movement Callbacks

Some actors may be invited to participate in a dance or movement callback.

Those auditioning are encouraged to bring:

👟 Comfortable shoes suitable for movement
👕 Clothing that allows for easy movement
🎼 Sheet music for their prepared song

Additional callback dates and instructions will be provided during the audition process.

About the Production

Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY will present The Color Purple: The Musical at theREP from January 28 through February 7, 2027.

The musical tells an emotional story centered on perseverance, love, personal growth, and finding one’s voice. Through music and powerful storytelling, the production follows Celie as she grows from a young woman facing adversity into someone who discovers her own strength and identity.
