The movie is based on The Wrong Side of Murder Creek, an autobiography by Bob Zellner. The book discusses his southern upbringing including being raised by a KKK grandfather, which led him to joining the Civil Rights movement.

I have natural hair that can be styled in any fashion my husband(pictured with me) and I love this period and how some great filmakers depict it!
