About the Play

The Lion in Winter is a sharp, witty, and dramatic story about power, family, ambition, and betrayal.

Set during Christmas in 1183, the play follows the Plantagenet royal family as they battle over who will inherit the kingdom. Eleanor of Aquitaine, once the wealthiest woman in the world, has been imprisoned after raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Released only for holidays, Eleanor returns to a family full of political schemes, emotional conflict, and competing ambitions.

As Eleanor famously says, “Every family has its ups and downs,” and this royal family certainly proves it.

Casting Information

Performers of all races, ethnicities, and genders are encouraged to audition.

This is a Non-AEA production. A $500 reimbursement for expenses will be provided.

All roles will use a Transatlantic American accent, which falls between an American accent and British Received Pronunciation.
