A virtual open call is now underway for Happy Feet, a new stage musical based on the 2006 Academy Award-winning animated film. Casting directors are seeking an exceptional tap dancer for the lead role of Mumble.
This is a paid opportunity for a highly skilled performer with strong tap technique, musicality, rhythm, and acting ability. The role is non-singing, making this a standout opportunity for tap dancers who can tell a story through movement and performance.
About the Production
Happy Feet is being developed as a new musical workshop in New York City. The production is part of an Actors’ Equity Tier 3 Workshop and features a creative team with experience across theatre, music, choreography, and live performance.
The workshop will run from February 15, 2027, through March 13, 2027, in New York, NY.

Mumble is described as vulnerable, lovable, persistent, determined, and ultimately triumphant. The role requires an exceptional tap dancer with acting ability and a strong performance presence.
What Casting Is Looking For
The team is seeking tap dancers with strong technical training and a highly developed sense of musicality. Dancers should be able to demonstrate:
✅ Clear tap articulation
✅ Strong rhythm and timing
✅ Confidence in rhythmic phrasing
✅ Understanding of swing rhythm
✅ Acting ability and emotional storytelling
✅ Strong command of musicality and movement
Improvisation is strongly encouraged because it helps the casting team see the dancer’s natural rhythm, technique, musical instincts, and control of time.
What to Submit
Applicants should prepare the following materials:
📹 Tap dancing footage that clearly shows and captures the sound of your dancing
🎧 A cappella tap footage is especially helpful, though dancing with music is also accepted
🎭 The Mumble monologue, a monologue of your choice, or a short story
🎬 A slate including your name and height
📸 A full-body shot
Videos do not need to be professionally produced. The most important thing is that the casting team can clearly see and hear your tap dancing.
